The “Holiday Season”

While I am a fan, to some extent, of the festivities, the decorations, for years, and I do mean years, I’ve railed against the commercialism of the now so-called “season,” which begins earlier each year with sales.

And, yes, I’ve done my shopping, virtually all online. In some ways I demurred to the recipients for their gifts; both sons received (or will receive) Amazon gift cards. Others, of course, received cookies that I bake every year; and shopping for my wife is complete; I’m just waiting for deliveries

There were years I enjoyed going to stores and the rush of the crowds; the crowds themself; ladened with packages. Not so much anymore; in fact, not at all.

Perhaps it’s just a matter of age. This season will come and go in a flash. It is, after all, a single day now dedicated to gift giving.

I think it is a time for reflection.

Shakespeare & Company

The New York Times reported yesterday that George Whitman, the owner of Shakespeare & Company died at 98. Not bad life at all; owner of one of the world’s most renowned bookshops and friend of so many great authors.

I remember back in ’98, and even earlier when I was in my late teens, hanging out there, reading and, of course, looking for girls. Here’s a photo I took at that time:
